Although there are exceptions, in general graphic novels are longer then comic books (some very long, such as Craig Thompson's Blankets, which is 600 pages) and printed/bound in better materials (if it is a hardcover then it is without a doubt a graphic novel).
Due to their increased length, graphic novels tend to tell lengthier and more complex story lines then a standard issue of a comic book can (giant 64+-page comic book not considered standard). Many graphic novels are in fact collections of work from previously printed comic books , although the types of stories told through the medium are constantly growing and evolving (hurray for comics being considered real literature!).
P.S: Although it is a rather short example at only 45 pages, what Erin was reading would be considered a graphic novel. More specifically,it is the graphic novel adaption of The Count of Monte Cristo, number 7 in a series of under the title Classics Illustrated by Berkley/ First Publishing.
